The NYPD Hiring Process: Let’s Break It Down

After you have taken the exam, the NYC Department for Citywide Administration Services (DCAS) will generate your “list number”. Candidates who pass the exam will be given a list number as well as an exam score (meaning the higher your score, the lower your list number will be).

After you pass the exam, the NYPD’s Candidate Assessment Division will email you an invitation to create a NYPD Candidate Portal account. Through this Portal, you will be required to complete the Personal History Questionnaire, as this is where your assessment process begins. Additionally, you will be asked to prepare and upload additional documents through the Portal (which you can find at NYPD Candidate Portal (nypdonline.org)

When you go to your first interview, you will be required to bring and/or upload certain documentation. A list of the items you will be required to upload and/or bring will be listed on your NYPD Candidate Portal after you complete your Personal History Questionnaire.

You can expect the hiring process to take an average of 6 months to 1 year to be hired. In rare cases the process can take as little as 2 months or as long as 4 years depending upon each candidate’s situation. Your exam is valid for four years from the date your list number is established.

How long do I have to file an appeal with the CSC?

The CSC must receive your appeal within 30 days of the date on the notice of disqualification. If you file your appeal after 30 days, you must submit an explanation for the delay with your appeal.

How do I file an appeal?

If you received a disqualification letter, that letter should provide instructions for filing an appeal with the CSC. For additional information, please visit the Filing a Disqualification Appeal with the CSC page.

You must be sure that the notice of disqualification is a final agency determination; if the notice provides instructions for appealing directly to:

the agency; or
the Department of Citywide Administrative Service’s (DCAS) Committee on Manifest Errors (CME); or
the New York City Transit Authority Personnel Review Board,

the appeal should NOT be sent to the CSC.

Will the Civil Service Commission Provide Me with an Attorney?

The Civil Service Commission does not provide attorneys for appellants.

What documentation should I submit to support my appeal?

The CSC requires that Appellants submit the notice of disqualification sent to them by the DCAS Commissioner or other examining agency when filing an appeal. The CSC cannot advise Appellants regarding how to pursue their appeals, or what documentation is necessary to submit in support of appeals before the CSC.

How To Ace The NYPD Oral Interview…

Failing to Admit Minor Issues May Result in NYPD Disqualification. One of the major pitfalls many candidates make is failing to admit to minor issues.

One example of a minor issue is doing poorly when you first enter college. When transitioning from high school to college, some candidates end up on academic probation. If you go to an oral psychological interview and deny poor performance in college, you will find yourself dealing with bigger problems then if you had just been honest. The interviewing psychologist already has your school transcript, so denying academic probation will only create a bigger problem causing you to be disqualified. Do not let fear and the uncertainty about how your personal history may be evaluated cloud your judgment – remember that honesty is always the best policy.

As a candidate, you should get your transcript before the interview so you know exactly what you did and when you did it. If you did poorly in the beginning, or at some point during college, it is better to say “I really should have studied harder and I regret not doing so”, than to lie. Your admission is always better than denying responsibility, or saying you don’t recall or saying that’s not what really happened.

You may have stressors such as work, transportation problems, problems at home or other struggles. The denial of poor academic performance is really unnecessary and will only get you disqualified.

The Interviewing Psychologist has your college records in writing, so saying you don’t recall or denying your record, or lying about your GPA will only lead to your disqualification.

Get the facts before your interview. Telling the truth and showing that you have remorse and have learned from your past struggles can only work in your favor.
