NYPD Aggressively Seeking New Police Officers…

According to a recent article published by the New York Post (click the link below for the complete story) the NYPD is desperately looking to hire new Police Officers in an effort to combat the seriously low number of viable applicants they currently having to consider for the job:

The New York Post article reported that the number of candidates taking the test to join the NYPD has plunged in the past eight years, further reporting that according to data from the Police Benevolent Association,  prospective members have dropped from 18,000 in 2017 to just 8,000 in 2025 — a 55% decline.

A union spokesman reported that Mayor Adams pledged in November to bring on 1,600 new cops in 2025 — but the city has been having trouble finding viable candidates. According to the New York Post article, the general rule is 1 out of every 8 candidates pass the test and meet all the other NYPD criteria. So to fill 1,600 academy slots, a pool of almost 13,000 candidates is needed.

The article concludes with the statement that “Our city needs to balance the scales — by both reducing the burdens on cops and boosting compensation — in order to compete for the top recruits.”

Have you taken a civil service exam to become a police officer, fire fighter, corrections officer, sanitation worker or other civil servant for New York City or New York State and received a letter stating you are disqualified for medical reasons? If so, you only have thirty (30) days to appeal this decision, so you must act quickly. Your best option is to seek the legal advice of an attorney who can properly handle your disqualification appeal.

There are many reasons why candidates can be medically disqualified. Any physical disability that would make it difficult to perform the duties of the position applied for would be grounds for disqualification. This would include minor problems with hearing or vision, as well as more major issues involving the respiratory or cardiovascular systems.

In the case of a medical disqualification you will need to see a third “independent” medical professional to obtain medical documentation that would support your argument that you are qualified for the job in question. This doctor will review the report written by the original doctor and write their own report with their findings. This report is then sent to the Civil Service Commission who will review it in order to make their final determination. You have sixty (60) days to submit medical documentation supporting your appeal.

A hearing may be scheduled to allow you to present your appeal. If a hearing is scheduled you will be notified in writing of the date and time. At this hearing you and/or your attorney have the opportunity to present arguments in support of your position. In the case of a medical disqualification, your doctor could be present to provide further insight into why they believe you are physically able to serve in the civil service position that you are applying for.

After the hearing, the Commission will determine whether or not to grant your appeal. The final decision is in written format and a copy is mailed to you and your lawyer. You then have the option of filing an Article 78 appeal if you are not satisfied with the outcome.

Will NYPD Hire Me if I have an Arrest Record?

Being arrested, receiving criminal court summonses or traffic tickets will not automatically disqualify you from becoming a Police Officer.

The only statutory disqualifiers to becoming an NYPD Police Officer are:

1. a felony conviction,
2. a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction, or
3. a dishonorable discharge from the military.

In essence, these are really the only 3 instances which will get you immediately disqualified from becoming an NYPD Police Officer. The NYPD considers the totality of your background investigation when determining your eligibility for employment. However, candidates must remember to ALWAYS be honest about all aspects of their background investigation, as there is a good possibility that any type of deception or omission of pertinent background information will lead to a disqualification. This point cannot be stressed enough. You should NEVER lie to your investigator. It is always better to be truthful about your history, background and experiences, then to lie about them or attempt to hide them.

The Police Commissioner is introducing a three-part plan to attract more candidates and modernize NYPD education requirements. This three-part plan includes:

1) reducing the number of college credits required of candidates in order to enter the Police Academy,

2) increasing the credits earned by completing recruit training at the academy, and

3) reinstating the timed-run requirement to graduate.

The NYPD is one of the only municipal police forces in the country that still requires college credits for candidates. As a result, in 2023, 29% of NYPD applications (which affected 2,275 potential officers) were disqualified solely because of this requirement. To remedy this hiring crisis, these changes will allow the NYPD to attract more potential officers while maintaining academic and fitness standards.

“Effective immediately, the NYPD will reduce the college credit requirement to enter the Police Academy from 60 credits to 24 credits. Individuals interested in an NYPD career who have acquired a minimum of 24 college credits are now eligible to apply, including more than 5,000 candidates on 29 active civil service lists who were previously ineligible.”

NYPD Commissioner Tisch is acutely aware of the current crisis facing the department, stating that NYPD Police Officers “work tirelessly to keep crime down and protect our communities, but it’s no secret that the NYPD is facing a hiring crisis. These changes will bring the department more in line with peer agencies across the country, strengthen our officer training, and ensure that the NYPD remains the best, and most rewarding way for someone to serve their community.”
