What Are Some Reasons the NYPD Disqualifies Candidate?
Criminal History: Candidates should understand that felony convictions, domestic violence misdemeanor convictions and dishonorable discharge from the military are all statutory disqualifiers.
Character: Another important factor is a candidate’s character. If a candidate has a history of violence, disrespect for the law or poor behavioral history at a job, these issues can lead to a disqualification. The NYPD will also take into consideration a candidate’s ability to make responsible choices and maintain a drug-free lifestyle.
Background Investigation: Candidates must also be very careful when providing facts about themselves and their background. Any inaccuracies or omissions in a candidate’s background can lead to a disqualification.
Drug Use: Candidates must also understand that the NYPD has a zero-tolerance policy on drug use, and failing a drug test can lead to a disqualification.
Financial Irresponsibility: A candidate’s history of financial irresponsibility can also lead to disqualification.
Education, Physical Fitness, or Psychological Evaluations: A candidate’s failure to meet the required qualifications in any of these areas can lead to a disqualification.
Tattoos: Something Candidates do not often take into consideration as a potential road block when applying to the NYPD are tattoos. Candidates must understand that tattoos with explicit, discriminatory, or gang-related content are prohibited.
If a Candidate is disqualified, they can appeal the decision to the Civil Service Commission (CSC). Such appeals must be made within 30 days of receiving the Notice of Disqualification (NOD). If the appeal is filed after 30 days, the candidate must provide an explanation for the delay.
